What are cheaper alternatives to influencer agencies?

Replace the work you do not need, not the whole service

Direct creator relationships, a marketplace, a freelance campaign manager or a commission-based programme can be alternatives to an influencer agency. None is automatically cheaper once you include your team’s time and the work removed from the agency brief.

Start by separating three outcomes: producing content, reaching a creator’s audience and generating attributable sales. An agency may coordinate all three. A content-production order or affiliate link does not necessarily replace that service. This guide is ThreeStove’s editorial framework, not a price survey or a claim of measured savings.

02

Direct outreach and freelance management

Direct relationships can suit a small, carefully selected group when you can handle research, outreach, briefs, agreements, revisions and payment. You remove an intermediary, but you take ownership of those tasks. Decide who will do the work before comparing budgets.

A freelancer can cover a narrower responsibility, such as creator selection or campaign coordination. Define deliverables, decision authority, reporting and what happens when a creator declines. Compare the scope with the agency proposal; a recruitment-only assignment is not a managed campaign.

Start with a relevant group, not the largest accounts. Smaller creators are an audience segment, not a payment model: they may still charge production and publication fees.

03

Marketplaces and UGC solve different problems

A marketplace can help you find or book creators, but check who checks suitability, negotiates rights, resolves disputes and follows up on delivery. Access to a directory is not the same as campaign management.

A UGC commission can buy content for your own channels without buying distribution to the creator’s audience. Specify formats, revisions, delivery and permitted use. If you want paid advertising rights or permission to run ads through a creator identity, agree that separately rather than assuming it is included.

Choose this route when the missing input is usable creative. Do not evaluate it as though you purchased guaranteed reach or sales.

04

When commission-based collaboration fits

Affiliate collaboration can fit creators who already make relevant recommendations and want to participate on clearly stated commission terms. It connects the variable reward to eligible attributed orders. It does not make content creation costless or guarantee a creator will accept the offer.

For ThreeStove, evaluate the advertiser workflow and current cost model: creator commission, a separate platform fee calculated on commission, and campaign funding through a reserve. Include any products, shipping, discounts, production fees and agreed usage rights in your own budget. No setup fee is not the same as no funding requirement.

Use a fixed production fee, commission or a combination when it matches the work. Do not ask for a demanding production brief while presenting uncertain commission as certain pay.

05

Compare alternatives by the work you keep

Direct outreach: suitable for a small relevant group when your team can own selection, briefing, agreements, revisions and payment. The intermediary fee is replaced by internal work, not removed from the budget altogether.

A creator marketplace: useful for discovery or booking. Confirm rights, fees, suitability checks and dispute support; access is not full-service campaign management.

A UGC creator: useful when you need reusable assets. Content production does not include audience distribution or paid-ad usage rights unless those are agreed.

A freelancer: useful for a defined task such as selection or coordination. Compare deliverables and decision ownership, not a narrow quote against a full-service agency fee.

Commission-based collaboration: useful for a sales-focused test when creators accept the offer and attribution terms are clear. Budget for commission, platform charges, any products and rights, and campaign funding. ThreeStove is relevant to this workflow, not a replacement for every production or reach objective.

In-house outreach: useful when the team has the time and skills to operate the programme. Track internal hours alongside external costs before describing it as cheaper.

06

Compare a complete brief and budget

Give each option the same assignment: product category, target audience, number and format of assets, publication commitments, revisions, usage period and reporting. A low quote is not comparable if important deliverables are missing.

For planning, add creator fees, commission, platform or management charges, product and fulfilment costs, rights and internal hours. Keep media spend separate if ads are involved. Then evaluate the purchased outcome: usable assets for production, relevant reach for distribution, and confirmed orders after returns for affiliate selling.

Attributed sales show which orders the rules credited. They do not by themselves prove that every order would have disappeared without the campaign.

07

Choose a bounded first test

Keep the agency when you need complex coordination or do not have capacity to own it. Use direct or freelance support when the work is narrow and you can supervise it. Test affiliate collaboration when relevant recommendations and measurable orders are the main objective.

Agree one owner, a budget, a review date and a definition of success before starting. Do not scale only because many creators registered.
